Introduction:

Prevalence of animal diseases is a serious impediment to the growth of the livestock sector. Losses due to some of these diseases like Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) results in reduction of milk production and trade in livestock products. Brucellosis is another economically important reproductive disease of livestock resulting in huge financial losses and has an adverse impact on human health; as it is zoonotic disease.

Objectives:

The objectives of the schemes are:

i)                   To achieve control of FMD by 2025 with vaccination and its eventual eradication by 2030.

ii)                 To control Brucellosis in livestock.

Salient features of the programme:

·         100% coverage of cattle and buffaloes for FMD, vaccinations twice a year, covering all states.

·         Vaccination programme extended to other susceptible species (Sheep, Goats, Pigs) for FMD.

·         100% coverage of all female cattle and buffalo calves (4-8 months old) for Brucellosis.

·         Deworming of livestock before vaccination.

·         Identification of animals using unique animal identification ear tags.

·         Uniform calendar for vaccination throughout the country.

·         100% funding from Central Government.

Monitoring Mechanism:

                        At National Level review, monitoring, etc is to be done by a National Steering Committee (NSC).

                        At State Level, reviewing and monitoring of the Programme will be done by a State Level Monitoring Unit.


                    National Animal Disease Control Programme (NADCP) for FMD and Brucellosis and Nationwide Artificial Insemination programme was launched by Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi at Mathura, Uttar Pradesh on 11th September, 2019. The launching programme was organised in all States and Union Territories.

                        On the same day launching programme in Mizoram was organised in 8 Districts by KVK in co-ordination with District A.H & Vety Officers where MP/MLA/Local Politicians inaugurate the launching programme.

Vaccinations of all cloven-footed animals (all FMD Susceptible animals) are going on in all Districts and expected to be completed by the end of September. As per the latest report total number of vaccinated animals is 26828.
